Transgender females can now play on girls’ teams in Utah according to a preliminary injunction that was issued on Friday, though they won’t be automatically qualified to participate.

According to the ruling by Judge Keith A. Kelly of the Third Judicial District Court for Salt Lake County, the judgement “would allow transgender females to compete on girls’ teams only when it is fair, as decided privately by a legislature-created panel.”

Following the filing of a lawsuit against the Utah High School Activities Association, Granite School District, Jordan School District, and their respective superintendents by the parents of three teenage transgender girls known by the pseudonyms Jenny Roe, Jane Noe, and Jill Poe, the motion was made. The lawsuit requested that the restriction be ruled unlawful and that its enforcement be stopped.
According to Judge Kelly’s ruling, the rule specifically excludes transgender girls from participating in girls’ team sports while allowing other girls to do so without restriction.

Male to female transgender student-athletes who are undergoing medically prescribed hormone treatment are permitted to compete on a boys team at any time, according to the Utah High School Activities Association’s 2022–2023 handbook, but they must first compete on a girls team after completing at least one calendar year of medically prescribed hormone treatment under a doctor’s supervision for the purpose of gender transition.
A detailed list of the student’s medications and therapies, as well as documented confirmation of the student’s consistent gender identification from an appropriate health care practitioner, must also be provided.
